Majority Rules! (Part Two)
October 26 - November 23, 2002
Opening reception October 25th, 7pm

Majority Rules! is a two-part exhibition at Free Gallery offering an innovative curatorial strategy: the audience decides what gets shown in the gallery. The first exhibition, which opened in June 2002, featured a slide available both in the gallery and online of 357 works by artists from over 25 countries gathered through an open call for submissions. Over 850 visitors to both the gallery and the website cast votes for their favorite pieces. Now that all the votes have been tallied, the 12 pieces that received the most votes will be shown in the second exhibition at Free Gallery, opening on October 25th and on view until November 23rd, 2002.

The artists featured in part two of Majority Rules! are Susan Alveshere (Minnewaukan, North Dakota, USA), Gerard di Falco (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA), Chad Ferber (Brooklyn, New York, USA), Eric Fong (London, England), Linda Ganjian (Brooklyn, New York, USA), Lisa Kereszi (Brooklyn, New York, USA), Larry Lee (Chicago, Illinois, USA), Raul Ortega (Glasgow, Scotland), Irena Paskali (Skopje, Macedonia), Denista Petrova (Edinburgh, Scotland), Joseph Pfeifer (New York City, USA), and Di Starr (El Sobrante, California, USA).

The work in this exhibition runs the gamut of subject, content, style and medium, including photography, painting, sculpture, installation, and drawing. Majority Rules! (Part Two) has been created through means usually reserved for politics and fame. Instead of the outcome of one curator's voice, this exhibition is the product of an entire global audience's collective opinion; this is democratic curating by the people, for the people.
The complete Majority Rules (Part One) slide show remains online at www.freegalleryglasgow.co.uk.

Exhibitions at the Free Gallery are curated on a rotating basis by a group of curators who are given creative freedom and who encourage feedback about their respective projects. Majority Rules! is created and organized by Tara McDowell and Letha Wilson, a collaborative team that takes an experimental approach to new methods of curating. Their most recent project, (Your Show Here), was on view at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Massachusetts, this past spring and their previous project, Curatorial Proposal, was shown at Artists Space in New York City in 2000.
